History of the Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos

The Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos is a non-profit civil association founded in Santa Rosa, La Pampa Province, Argentina, in connection with the editions of the International Congress on Philo of Alexandria held in the city. Its establishment is part of a long-standing international tradition of academic exchange and collaboration, consolidated through the Philonic congresses held in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025, and through the publication of their respective Proceedings . This continuity of meetings, exchanges, and scholarly output highlighted the existence of a community devoted to Philonic studies and fostered the creation of a permanent institutional space to strengthen these ties.

The process of establishing the Sociedad formally began on 20th July 2025, with the appointment of a Provisional Committee tasked with taking the necessary steps towards its creation. Its responsibilities included drafting the preliminary Statutes, gathering expressions of support and organizing the procedures required to provide the initiative with a stable legal and institutional structure. A decisive moment came on 1st September 2025, when, at 6 p.m., the Constitutive General Meeting was held in Santa Rosa. It was attended by the members of the Provisional Committee and the Sociedad’s first associate members: Paola Druille, Marta Alesso, Laura Pérez, María Rocío Saitúa Popoviez, and Tomás Heredia, who were later joined by Camila Flores. The meeting was chaired by Paola Druille, with Laura Pérez as secretary. During the meeting, the principal foundations of the new organization were approved. First, the General Meeting unanimously approved the name Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos, together with its acronym SPS, and established the city of Santa Rosa as the Association’s legal address. The Statutes were also approved, and it was decided that the Association would have perpetual duration, expressing the intention to establish an academic space that would transcend the individual careers of its members and endure over time. The General Meeting also defined the objectives that would guide the Sociedad’s activities: to promote research on Philo of Alexandria, to foster the teaching of the classical languages, and to encourage exchange among scholars working in the field. For this purpose, the Sociedad would organize study days, academic meetings, symposia, and congresses, as well as enter into agreements with related institutions, both nationally and internationally, and publish scholarly and academic works. On the same occasion, the Sociedad’s first officers were elected: Paola Druille (CONICET, National University of La Pampa), as President and Founder; Marta Alesso (National University of La Pampa), as Vice-President; Laura Pérez (National University of La Pampa), as Secretary; María Rocío Saitúa Popoviez (National University of La Pampa), as Treasurer; Tomás Heredia (National University of La Pampa), as Ordinary Member of the Executive Committee; and Camila Flores (National University of La Pampa), as Alternate Member. The formation of this first Executive Committee established the governing structure of the new organization and embodied the commitment to sustaining a collective scholarly endeavour.

The founding stage concluded with the decision to entrust the first President with carrying out the procedures required to obtain legal personality before the Directorate-General for the Supervision of Legal Entities and the Public Registry of Commerce of La Pampa Province. On 2nd December 2025, before the notary Paola Montero, the Sociedad’s Constitutive Act and Statutes were formally executed by public deed. Subsequently, on 13th May 2026, the General Director for the Supervision of Legal Entities and the Public Registry of Commerce, Attorney Guillermo Eduardo Rucano, granted the SPS state authorisation to operate as a legal entity, pursuant to Article 174 of Argentina’s Civil and Commercial Code (Resolution No. 310/2026).

Thus, between July 2025 and March 2026, an initiative that emerged from a group of scholars devoted to the study of Philo of Alexandria developed into a formally constituted civil association. The foundation of the SPS thus represented the decision to transform an intellectual community into an institutional space, open to dialogue among different generations and scholarly trajectories devoted to the study of Philo and his legacy.

Mission and Values

Our Purpose

The Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos is committed to promoting, developing, and spreading research on Philo of Alexandria, fostering interdisciplinary scholarship that brings together literary, linguistic, historical, philosophical, and archaeological perspectives. It situates such research within the context of the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East, the Greek and Latin traditions, and the enduring influence of Philonic thought on world culture. The SPS also seeks to strengthen research and academic training, with particular emphasis on the study of the classical languages, and especially Hellenistic Greek, by promoting the renewal of teaching methodologies and the development of skills for the translation and philological analysis of the works of Philo of Alexandria. At the same time, the SPS is committed to building and strengthening a community of scholars devoted to Philonic studies, creating spaces for dialogue, exchange, and collaboration among researchers, teachers, students, and all those engaged in this field of knowledge. For this purpose, it organizes study days, academic meetings, symposia, congresses, and other scholarly and cultural activities; fosters cooperation with national and international institutions; and promotes the production and diffussion of scholarly publications. In this spirit, the Sociedad regards Philonic studies as a field of knowledge shaped through dialogue across disciplines, generations, and institutions, and is committed to contributing to its consolidation, renewal, and wider development, both within academia and in society at large.

Values

Los valores de la Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos The values of the Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos guide its scholarly, academic, and cultural activities and define the way in which the institution understands the production and circulation of knowledge.

Academic rigour

The SPS maintains an ongoing commitment to excellence, rigour, and integrity in research. It promotes the direct and critical study of sources, philological precision, methodological soundness, and well-founded scholarly exchange as essential principles for the production of high-quality knowledge.

International openness

The SEF understands research as a practice fundamentally open to international exchange. It promotes the creation of collaborative networks, dialogue with scholars and institutions from different countries, and participation in international projects, academic meetings, and publications. At the same time, it seeks to strengthen the presence of Philonic scholarship produced in different languages within international academic networks.

Interdisciplinary dialogue

Philonic studies require the integration of diverse perspectives and fields of knowledge. The Sociedad therefore fosters dialogue across disciplines, bringing together contributions from philology, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, archaeology, and other fields concerned with the study of ancient cultures. This interdisciplinary approach enables a more comprehensive understanding of the works of Philo of Alexandria, taking into account the complexity of their contexts and the diversity of their subsequent developments.

Knowledge spreading

The SPS is committed to ensuring that scholarly knowledge circulates, is shared, and reaches diverse audiences. It therefore promotes the publication and diffusion of research findings, the organization of academic and cultural activities, and the creation of spaces for exchange that bring Philonic studies closer to the wider community. Diffusion is understood not as a stage subsequent to research, but as a fundamental part of the Sociedad’s social and cultural responsibility.

Governing Bodies

Executive Committee

The Executive Committee is the body responsible for leading and representing the Sociedad de Estudios Filónicos, ensuring that its aims are fulfilled and that its scholarly, academic, and cultural activities are developed effectively. It oversees the Sociedad’s institutional affairs, the planning of projects and activities, the promotion of national and international partnerships and collaborations, and the management of the Sociedad’s affairs, ensuring that each initiative is carried out in accordance with its principles and values.

Its role is also to coordinate the proposals of its members and to strengthen an active, open, and collaborative scholarly community, fostering research, exchange, and the diffusion of Philonic studies.
